Getting Sent to Buenos Aires

August 25th, 2011

I still remember that fateful day in the airport. I wept in my brother Akdish’s arms as I did not want to leave my tranquil life in India. My company made me as the new manager for a branch in Argentina. They knew I had never traveled anywhere outside my country and I explained to them that I was not sure if I could get used to the culture and language of Argentina. They still wanted me to go to Argentina, promising me it was a very nice place to visit and the locals there are very polite in every aspect. To be frank, I felt like my company had cheated me. They had originally told me that I was going to be sent to the United States, but later changed their minds and sent me to Argentina.

It has been 4 years since I have left India. Buenos Aires has truly become my home. I had a bit of trouble making friends at first, but I went to a social wine tasting in Buenos Aires. I met a lot of great people there, and I have never thought of returning to my country again. I used to be a pure vegetarian saying ‘no’ to all meat and drinks, but things changed two years back when my friend Michelle convinced me to have a sip of Malbec wine. “Wow” was the first word that came out of my mouth after fateful sip. It was the best thing I had ever tasted in my life and I needed another glass of that delicious Malbec wine. The next day, I sent out a few emails to my family and friends back in Bombay. My friends didn’t believe me at first, but when I explained a little bit more about this life changing experience, they were as thrilled as I was, and instantly bought tickets to come visit me in Buenos Aires.

I know great leaders were quoted, “He came, he conquered and he went,” but in my case it was the wine that won my heart. So when I return back to India, I am going to carry as much wine from Argentina as will fit in my suitcase, carry-on, and in my hands.

Lancaster Estate Winery

April 3rd, 2011

Ted Simkins was a wine distributor in 1995 when he purchased the Maacama Creek Winery and renamed it. A top choice for a red wine club because of it’s location in the hills above the Alexander Valley, Chalk Hill and Knights Valley AVA’s which are all known to produce, dense and deep red wines. Simkins spared no expense in building the winery on the 50 acre estate, caves have been dug into the mountainside and now close to six thousand five hundred cases of wine are produced each and every year, all of the grapes being estate grown. David Ramey came on as consulting winemaker fairly recently, offering another pair of experienced and respected eyes on the vines, which are only now starting to come into their own. We have high hopes for the winery and think Lancaster Estate Winery could be among the next generation of great Sonoma wine names.
